Chapter IV: Silence



June, 1940.


Rain fell over Berlin.

The windows were shut.
Yet the damp air found its way inside,
leaving the papers upon the desk faintly curled.

Hitler closed the report.
He said nothing.

Himmler remained standing.

A long silence passed between them.


At length, Hitler raised his head.
"Enigma."

"It has reported nothing."

Hitler nodded.
"I see."

That was all.


He rose
and walked to the window.

The garden was empty.
Only the rain remained.

"Himmler."

"Yes."

"Quietly verify that the entire German Army is equipped for winter."

Himmler looked up.

"Quietly."
It was a short command.

"...Understood."

Hitler did not turn around.

"It has already been exposed."

Himmler saluted.
He asked no further questions.

The door closed.

Hitler was alone.

He returned to his desk.
He opened a drawer.

Inside lay a letter.
The paper was old.
Only its fold was fresh.

It was from an old friend.


......For a long while, Hitler simply looked at it.

Then, without a word,
he closed the drawer.


The rain continued to fall.
As though remembering the days now gone.
