204 60 Stars Astrology: Season Vacation

Part 2 – About Mercury ☿

1. Now, to kick off the second half of our journey, we begin with Mercury.

As you can see from its symbol ☿, Mercury represents two entwined serpents.

If you turn this symbol on its side, it becomes the mark of Virgo ♍.

Two serpents coiling around a staff—that is its true symbol.

2. Speaking of serpents, one naturally thinks of Asclepius, the legendary physician.

He is also represented as the constellation Ophiuchus (the Serpent Bearer), which signifies medicine.

Mercury represents and points to the discipline, wisdom, and knowledge of medicine, hygiene, daily living, and pharmaceuticals.
From there, it extends to mean letters, literature, and publishing.

In short, it represents practical wisdom deeply rooted in daily life.

While Mercury is often equated with the god Hermes, that is actually a slight misconception.

The god Hermes is the ruler of Gemini.

He governs the general action of air, musical instruments (specifically stringed instruments), vehicles with two or more wheels, games played by two or more people, and chatting with companions. His defining characteristic is that he almost always represents things in pairs or multiples—"two" or more.

While Mercury does indeed feature two coiling serpents, it does not constantly signify things in multiples.

Rather, it reflects the power of the goddesses—such as Athena, Demeter, and Astraea.

Organizations like the United Nations—which seems to love pyramids—and the World Health Organization (WHO) are structured under this symbol of Mercury.

As an easy-to-understand example, let us look at the horoscope of Audrey Hepburn during the final years of her life.

Just before her passing, Hepburn was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest civilian honor in the United States—for her long-term dedication to international hygiene and humanitarian field efforts with UNICEF and the UN.

This sextile from Mercury perfectly signifies a reward and honor received in the fields of medicine and public health.

3. Furthermore, Mercury carries the meaning of "ancient wisdom."

Wisdom related to medicinal herbs and daily survival—including matters once considered magic and sorcery.

It also points to alchemy, though nowadays it might be easier to simply call it chemistry.

Therefore, in most cases, you will find charts much easier to read if you view Mercury as representing the field of health and hygiene, as well as the recipes, formulas, and books associated with it.

After all, in ancient times, medicine was considered a form of magic.

......In the summer of 1798, Napoleon embarked on his Egyptian Expedition.

This was when the famous Battle of the Pyramids took place.

He spent a night inside the Great Pyramid, and along with numerous ancient monuments and artifacts, he effectively brought esoteric magic itself into the hands of France.

(Fig. 2)

Here, we see that Mercury and the M.C. form a trine▲ with his progressed Sun.

The M.C., of course, represents the action of air—meaning the expedition itself—while Mercury signifies the esoteric magic he acquired.

4. ...Now, besides these meanings, Mercury also signifies language, magazines—in other words, the mass media and the publishing industry.

In this particular sense, its meaning does come quite close to that of Hermes!

....When Kakuei Tanaka resigned as Prime Minister, it was precisely because the mass media relentlessly exposed and criticized his various scandals.

Yes, specifically through Japanese weekly magazines that were effectively under direct American management.

At that exact time, his progressed Sun was positioned in opposition to his natal Mercury.

Tanaka had accomplished the monumental task of regulating elderly medical expenses (drug prices)—making healthcare free for the elderly.

However, this invoked the furious wrath of certain pharmaceutical manufacturers, or rather, foreign poison-peddling conglomerates, and the law was subsequently hollowed out in parts.

.....Well, in that regard, things are much the same now as they were back then.

That’s all for today.
