107 Mythology and Celestial Bodies

③ About the Orion  (OFF SEASON ②-3)

1.  "The Orion", the most famous constellation.

Even people who are not interested in astrology know the constellation Orion, and many can indicate its position in the winter night sky.

Of the Orion's seven prominent stars, with the exception of the red Betelgeuse, they are said to belong to a large physical mass or neighborhood called the Great Orion Association.

These stars are thought to have originally arisen from a large group of diffuse nebulae called the Great Nebula in Orion (M42).

There are no other constellations as showy as this one.

Each star is also large and bright, tens to hundreds of times the size of the Sun☉.
This is why the constellation is so bright even though it is much farther away (about 300 to 2000 light years from the Sun) than Sirius (8.7 light years from the Sun).

2. Since the ancient times, Orion was considered to be the place where kings are, where the souls of kings go, and where God is.

Especially, the three stars of Orion, which you all know, were worshipped.

If you are wondering why Orion is so important, you can see the picture I wrote at the top of this blog page.

100,000 years ago, Orion was in its current shape, but Canis Major is not. I dare say that it is the shape of a dog with an elongated neck.
100,000 years from now, Orion will look like it does today, but Canis Major will be broken. Its head will be lost.

Orion, especially the three stars in the center, is a symbol of "eternity", different from other constellations.

3. Well, the constellation Scorpius in summer is also a constellation that has a fairly long-lasting appearance.

Whether 200,000 years ago or 200,000 years later, Orion and Scorpius are the only constellations that look the same as they do today.

In the summer, when Scorpius is visible, Orion is no longer visible.
The myth of the “ Scorpion who killed Orion” must be a very old and ancient myth.

If you are interested in the shape of the constellations, you can visit a Japanese website called "Hoshi-No-Koto" !

The site explains clearly the changes in the constellations and the positions of the stars.

That's all for today.
